The problems in Darfur didn’t just pop out of the blue, the conflicts began in February of2003. It all started when two main rebel groups, the Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) and the Justice and Equality Mouvement (JEM) began attacking governement targets saying the region was being neglected by the governement. More than a dozen rebel groups are now believed to exist although the two main groups have since then split up, some along ethic lines. For more information about this topic and to learn more about how the conflict in Darfur started and the current situations please click here.

Janjaweed means man on a horse with a gun, that puts a lovely image in your head doesn’t it? The people in this tribe are Arab descendents they are lighter skinned than the “African” descendents, or the other people living in Darfur. The Janjaweed did not become as aggressive as they are today, until 2003 when two non-Arab tribes the Sudan Liberation Army and Justice and Equality Movement went against the government. Since 2003. 2 million people are living in refugee camps, where the Janjaweed members parade around the boarders. The refugees sometimes wander far from camp, in search of firewood or food, and if the Janjaweed members see them there is only one option. (Men are killed, and women are raped, or abducted and kept as sex slaves.) The three other tribes that are in Darfur are the Zaghawa, Masalit, and Fur. It has been reported that the Janjaweed men will go into those tribes, and try to bribe farmers with horses by saying they will supply the men with guns and pay a salary of $116 monthly. It’s a tough decision because if they do join they will have to kill people they know and loved, or get killed by the members sooner or later. Whether they die at their home, at camp, or outside camp boundaries. It’s up to themto decide their fate, especially without the government, who claims to have no support for the Janjaweed what so ever… uhmm right.

We are planning the beginning stages for something called International Blog for Darfur Day, where students around the world will blog about Darfur for a 24 hour period. We are planning this because we think it is important to raise awareness about genocide in Darfur and the issues surrounding it. The other main reason we would like to have students have this blog day is that we are calling for an international intervention to stop the bloodshed in Darfur.

We are also trying to get groups like Save Darfur and maybe International Crisis Group to get involved and to join us while blogging on this day.

Remember, this is just a beginning stage for the International Blog For Darfur Day.

Any feedback?

Let us know.

We are going to sell green Save Darfur wristbands to spread awareness about Darfur. With the money we make, we will send it to refugees in Darfur and in Chad. Many of the people in Darfur have been kicked off their land and are forced to cross the border to Chad.

I think it is possible that a group of 8th graders could make a difference. With the help of the Internet, we can spread information to everyone, and we are not doing this as a joke. Our group is really trying to make a difference. Also, I think it means a lot if a group of 8th graders have the maturity and are willing to try to make others see what’s going on in Darfur. So please support us and comment us if you have any questions or ideas.

Hey guys so we are thinking about buying about 100 wristbands and selling them in the morning in the front of the school. The price is going to be 2.00 a wrist band.
